Vijay Vikram Singh: The Voice Behind Bigg Boss

Millions of Indians hear Vijay Vikram Singh's voice every night without knowing his name. As the narrator of Bigg Boss since 2010, his lines have opened and closed episodes of one of India's biggest reality shows for over a decade.

But the path that led him there had nothing to do with performing arts.

Vijay grew up in Kanpur with ambitions of joining the armed forces. When that did not work out, he pursued an MBA in International Business from Banaras Hindu University after clearing CAT with a 93 percentile.

A campus placement led him to JPC Cement, followed by a government job at MSTC. It was a routine transfer to Bombay that changed everything, when a colleague pointed out that his voice had real potential, something he had never considered before.

That comment led him to explore voice work seriously at 29, an age he describes as an accidental turning point. He trained under mentors Darpan Mehta and Khodus Wadia, the latter of whom pushed him to leave his secure job entirely.

With encouragement from his then fiancee, now wife, Vijay resigned and served a one month notice period. Before it ended, he was cast in Dance India Dance Season 1, which matched his previous salary within a handful of episodes.

From there, his career built steadily through DID Lil Masters, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs, before he auditioned for and won the role of Bigg Boss narrator in 2010.

Rather than settle into comfort, Vijay returned to theatre in 2015 purely to sharpen his craft, which led him into dubbing, teaching, and eventually a chance audition for The Family Man that opened the door to acting.

Nearly a decade later, his biggest takeaway is that there is no single correct technique for acting, only the discipline of staying connected to yourself and aware of what each moment demands.
